In Australian Aboriginal mythology the opal or “Wala ” gets it’s name from the sun goddess. According to mythology every day Wala ventures to the southern mountains bringing back the sun to store in a bag. She keeps the sun in this bag until the moon sets and a new day beings.
The opal has been cloaked in magic and mystery for centuries. It is set apart from other gemstones because of its characteristic appearance and vibrant colours which change and flash as you turn the gem in your hand. No two opals are alike.
There are two derivations of the word ‘opal’ . The Greek word opallos, meaning “to see changes of color” and the Roman use of the Sanskrit word opalus (upala) which means ‘precious stone.
Opal is a precious gemstone. It is a formation of non-crystalline silica gel. Millions of years ago, this silica gel seeped into crevices and cracks of the earth’s sedimentary strata. Through eons of time and through nature’s heating and moulding processes, the gel hardens and today we can appreciate these brilliant opal gemstones.
Metaphysical Qualities of Opal
According to an old Australian Aboriginal legend, the Creator came down from the heavens on a rainbow and delivered a message of peace for all mankind. The stones which were near the place where his foot touched the ground suddenly became alive and began to sparkle – this was believed to be the birth of opal stone.
Early races credited Opals with magical qualities and traditionally, opal was said to aid its wearer in seeing limitless possibilities. It was believed to clarify by amplifying feelings, buried emotions and desires. The Romans had been wearing opals for centuries and considered them a symbol of hope and purity. The gem was carried as a good luck charm or talisman. They believed opals instilled the gift of prophecies, warned of poison, brought good fortune, and protected against disease. Early Greeks believed they embodied the powers of foresight and prophecy. In the 7th Century it was believed that opals possessed magical properties.
